Using The Data File Link Window

The Data File Link Window is the "editing" window for Data File Link records.

On the left hand side of the window are a set of hyperlinks that let you perform operations on the Data File Link record, or the computer file it's linked to. The names of the hyperlinks describe what they'll do for you when you click on them.

How To Open The Data File Link Window

Before you can edit a Data File Link record you first have to locate and display that record in an "Index" window, such as the Data File Links Index Window (image below), which lists all the Data File Link records in the project.

You can open this window by clicking on the Data File Links Index hyperlink found at the top of almost every window in the software.

Once you've located the Data File Link record in the "Index" window, single click on it to select it, and then click the Edit Selected Data File Record hyperlink (image above) to load the record into it's editing window (image below).

Opening The Record's Linked Computer File So You Can Work With That File's Contents

If you click on the Open The Source Data File hyperlink, you'll see the contents of that file displayed, in the software that your computer uses to work with that type of computer file.

Click the Open The Source Data File hyperlink to display the linked files 
                                contents.

The Data File Link record above is linked to an image file, and my computer uses the Windows Photo Viewer software to display image files.

On this computer its the Windows Photo Viewer software that displays 
                                image files.

Deleting The Data File Link Record

To delete the Data File Link record that the window is working with, just click on the Delete This Data File Record hyperlink.

Click the Delete This Data File Record hyperlink to delete the 
                record and close the window.

You'll see a dialog box pop up on the screen and it's asking you to confirm the deletion.

Click the Yes button and the dialog box and the Data File Link window will close.

The file get's deleted from its database and all of its linked parent records.

Changing The Record's Source File To A Different Computer File

You can change which computer file the record is linked to by clicking on the Change The Source Data File hyperlink.

Click the Change The Source Data File hyperlink to link the record to a different computer file.

After you click this link, a File Navigation Dialog box like the one shown below pops up.

Use it to locate and select the new computer file.

Then double click anywhere on that file's entry in the dialog box to have the record link to it.

Or, single click on it, and then click on the Open button.

Use the displayed File Navigation dialog box to locate and select the 
                new computer file. Double click on its entry to link it to the record.

The dialog box closes and the File Name and File Path fields change their values.
